Step One – Purchasing The Material

Take your time and pick your colors and supplies with care. Gathering swatches and samples, ordering and delivery times can and will take up to two weeks. I wouldn’t select a color by looking at it on the Internet. What you see on the Internet and what is actually in your hand can be quite different. Get the material in hand so you can actually see and feel the product in question.

Selecting the color combination of your table should not be taken lightly. You’re going to be playing on this table for many years, so choose the colors carefully. Obtain samples of the felt and vinyls before ordering. While looking at the small swatches, attempt to visualize what your table would look like in the various color schemes you are trying to create.

Step Two – The Tools

Depending upon how much of this is in your tool arsenal and how much you will have to borrow or purchase will determine the time involved in getting ready. I rate the difficulty of my projects by the number of trips to the hardware store. The more trips, the more difficult the project. Our project should be a one tripper!

The Tools

The tools we will be using are pretty basic. If you don’t own what is needed, borrow from a friend, neighbor or relative. Or if you always wanted to own a particular tool, this will be a good excuse to buy it. Since we had our lumber yard cut the table top and rail pieces to 42”, we will not need a circular saw. If you always wanted to own a circular saw, then by all means go buy one and cut the table top yourself!

Below is a list of what else we’ll need:

Saw horse (2)
Hand jig saw with blade
Cordless drill (or electrical drill if this is what you have)
Router
Staple gun (Electric or manual)
½ inch radius rounding over router bit
Sharp scissors
Sharp utility knife
Sharpe marker
Sturdy metal one inch wide tape measure
L shape ruler (or a wood yard stick. You’ll see what I mean later)
1 x box of 100 zinc #10 x 1 ¼” wood screws
1 x 16.75 oz. spray can 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Adhesive
2 x boxes Craftsman ¼” wire staples (Heavy Duty, Narrow Crown, chisel point staples)
1/8” drill bit
1 x quart can primer seal paint
Blue painters tape
Paint roller
Paint brush

SAFETY WARNING: When using any power tool use proper ear and eye protection. When applying the primer or adhesive, be sure you do so in a well ventilated room. In short, read all the warning labels on the products and follow their recommended safety precautions. If you are unsure of how to properly use any of the materials, contact the manufacturer.

Step Three – Measuring

Measuring should take around 30 minutes to 60 minutes. However, this is not a race to see how fast we can build a quality poker table. Take your time and make sure your measurements are correct before proceeding to Step Four – The First Cut.

Step Four – The First Cut

Before we can start cutting we need to fasten both pieces of plywood together. This is done to assure that our outside curve cut matches the table top and the rail exactly. Simply drill a few holes at each end where our rail will be. I also put one in the middle of the sheet.

Step Five – The Router

We will be rounding the edges of the top inside and top outside of the rail and the bottom of the table top. This is being done to give the entire table a rounded appearance. Having rounded edges will also assist in applying the foam and vinyl.

Step Six – The Final Cut

Since all the measurements and lines are done, all we need to do is drill a few holes and then cut.

Step Seven – The Final Router

You can now put away your jigsaw and grab the router for the last time. Rounding the inside top of the rail can be a bit tricky. Because the rail is light and very flexible, it is very difficult to round the inside top edge if it were placed on the saw horse.

Step Eight – Time To Paint

Congratulations! You have completed all the wood cutting and shaping for the project.

This next step is a step I would say 99% of the people constructing their own poker table, do not do. One, because the thought never crossed their mind. Or two, they just don’t feel it is necessary.

Step Nine – Attaching Our Table Top To The Folding Table

It is now time to attach the table top to the supporting folding table. The important part here is to make sure the folding table is aligned correctly on top of the table top before it gets affixed.

Step Ten – Attaching The Table Top Foam

This step is as easy as it sounds, however, you can screw it up if you’re not paying attention.

Step Eleven – Completing The Rail

Don’t let me scare or intimidate you with this next statement. “This step is by far the most difficult.” Difficult meaning time consuming and a needed eye for detail. We’re not painting the Mona Lisa, but we will need some craftsmanship to create the rail. Stay on task and I will guide you through this with no problems!

Step Twelve – Applying The Felt

Before placing the roll on the table top, take a clean cloth and wipe down the table top foam. Laying our felt on top of dirt, saw dust, dog hair or any other foreign matter would be a disaster!

Step Thirteen – Attaching The Rail To The Table Top

After the rail has been aligned to the edges around the entire table, take your finger tips and lightly place them against the rail and table edge as you walk around the table.

Step Fourteen – Wrapping The Rail Foam And Vinyl Around The Outside Edge

Before we can wrap the vinyl in place, we need to cut our foam to size.
